WEBCAST: HHS technology chief Todd Park talks with opensource.com
Open Your World webcast with Todd Park - July 7 at 3 p.m.
If you think you have an innovative or entrepreneurial spirit and are interested in data, health, and technology, then join us for an opensource.com Open Your World Forum webcast with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Todd Park. Park will speak about the power of open data for improving health.
Todd's position with HHS was created by the Obama administration as a change agent. And he is taking that role seriously.
Todd is passionate about improving health. To prove it, he's taken the culture of HHS toward one of data liberation, of openness, and of government 2.0. He wants everyone to understand how open data can be harnessed to improve the health of the country. Taking a page out of the Tim O'Reilly playbook, Todd has set up a public and private collaboration where government serves as a platform for open data and the community of individuals and companies are the creators.
The HHS has a treasure trove of health data, worth billions of dollars. It includes smoking rates, obesity rates, hospital quality, drug, device, and food recalls. Opening it up to everyone is a radical idea. But, "it's insufficient to just put data out there," Todd says. "We want to market them to people who can turn them into super-cool apps." And that is exactly what is happening.
Less than 90 days after the first batch of data was released last year, people built and deployed several incredible applications. So HHS has provided a data platform, continuing to put it out there in a way that is easily accessible and machine-readable, hoping to get people excited.
Todd is looking for people in academia, technology, healthcare, and government. Whether healthcare providers, experts, or simply consumers, we're all in this together. Anyone can look at the data and perhaps come up with cool ideas that can be used to improve health. Apps can be aimed at consumers, doctors, care integration, data mining, decisions, support and more.
As Todd proclaimed at South-by-Southwest (SXSW): “There's never been a better time to be an innovator at the intersection of data, healthcare, and technology”
