February

  • linux.conf.au is an open source conference, considered one of the most prestigious in the southern hemisphere. Every year open source geeks from across the globe gather in Australia to meet their fellow technologists, share the latest ideas and innovations, and spend a week collaborating on free, open source software projects.

A group of enthusiastic Canberrans are hosting linux.conf.au in January, 2013. This is Canberra's centenary year, making it a particularly significant year for the city. Canberra last hosted the conference in 2005. Eight years on, we are delighted that the conference is returning to Canberra. We have gathered a strongly motivated team to run the conference, and linux.conf.au 2013 will be a conference to remember.

  • Where: HacDC (1525 Newton St NW, Washington, DC 20010)

HacDC will be hosting one of many, self-organized, global hackathons to memorialize the late Aaron Swartz (November 8, 1986 – January 11, 2013).

Participants will be asked to advance solutions to issues that were near to Aaron's heart.

Possible activities for the day include furthering work on his repositories, opening access to information belonging in the public domain, developing or contributing to countermeasures to Internet censorship, and exploring code-driven methods to enhance social justice through access to data.
