We are seeing the beginning of a new stage in innovation in operating systems and in virtualization. There is a new excitement over containers, distributed operating systems, security, and new languages are being used. Mobile, the internet of things, and cloud are changing the way operating systems are used.

An operating system now might just run a single application, as part of a larger distributed system, with no person ever touching the system. Much of the traditional operating system might not be needed, but there are new security and performance requirements. Virtualization has become ubiquitous, and is getting smaller and faster.
