All Things Open conference preview

All Things Open conference

The dates of October 23-24 have been circled on my calendar for a while. Why? Because All Things Open is coming to Raleigh, NC. It’s the first open source-focused conference of it’s kind to come to the capital of North Carolina. I’m also excited because having the conference come to Raleigh fulfills one of the five pillars in my definition of an open source city. » Read more

Bringing open source to the masses, one small, local conference at a time

open source conference, event

The folks who planned the RTP180 conference for Open source all the things a few weeks ago in North Carolina did so in an open source manner. Using Triangle Wiki—a local collection of information about the towns of and around Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill that anyone can edit and add to—they posted info, found speakers, and coordinated the agenda. Then, they opened the event by bringing in "contributors" from the crowd to give the introduction.

How a festival gets planned and organized the open source way

SPARKcon open source festival

SPARKcon is an interdisciplinary creativity, art, and design festival produced by the non-profit creativity incubator, Visual Art Exchange (VAE). SPARKcon 2013 will be the 8th annual event and will be held September 12-15 in downtown Raleigh, NC. See an overview of the SPARKcon festival in this video. Read an interview with the founder of SPARKcon, Aly Khalifa, in this article.

My first encounter with SPARKcon was shortly after I moved to Raleigh when I saw someone wearing the T-shirt. Intrigued solely by the name, a quick web search told me that I had just missed the event, held each September in downtown Raleigh, and a great opportunity to get to know the local creative community.

SPARKcon is described as a "creative potluck" with an "open source, for the people, by the people" approach, showcasing "the creative hub of the South."

What to expect at OSCON 2013

open source conference

This year I get to go to OSCON for the first time ever! I’ve been on the library conference circuit for years, but this will be my first non-library con and I’m ready to learn as much as I possibly can in three days.

The conference is actually five days long, it starts with two days of tutorials (which I won’t be able to attend), but I plan on attending at least one session during every time slot during the next three days of sessions and keynotes. I went through the program and want to attend so many things (including things in the same time slot).

Open Source, Open Standards 2013 conference report

Open Source, Open Standards 2013 conference report

Last week Open Source, Open Standards 2013 took place in London, an event focused on the public sector. Naturally these being two topics we’re very keen on here at OSS Watch I went along too.

Overall the key message to take away from the event was just how central to public sector IT strategy these two themes have become, and also how policy is being rapidly turned into practice, everywhere from the NHS to local government.
