Those of us who are concerned about software freedom should prefer completely free formats like Ogg Vorbis (lossy) and FLAC (lossless, compressed). We should particularly avoid file formats that include options for digital rights management (DRM). In theory, one might think that DRM is just a mechanism to prevent the unauthorized use (theft?) of someone's intellectual property. However, certain vendors use DRM to force their customers to use their software, and sometimes hardware. Once again, Wikipedia has a nice detailed article about this whole format business.

Until now, Flac has the best behaviour. Good sound and dynamics. Would it be something even better?

I realize this is an old posting but how do you vote? I think most ppl prefer FLAC because they were told to. For archiving I would certainly agree that lossless should be used but for listening I doubt most voters could tell the difference or have even participated in an unbiased blind listening test

Thanks for your comment, nekkator. I'm not sure if you're asking how I (the author) votes, or wondering if you can still vote. If it's the latter, I believe votes are closed automatically after some time. If it's the former, I prefer FLAC, and the closer to the original master, the better. Why throw anything away?

hi
i recently converted a raw music into both flac and ogg with ultimate bit rates and after that what i got as the result was wonderful as flac gave more sound detail in higher frequencies than the oog would give

Thanks for sharing your experience, Godisone. I am certainly happy with my growing collection of FLAC files.
