I'd like to invite you to join us for a virtual book club to discuss open leadership, organizational management, and other ideas from The Open Organization: Igniting Passion and Performance by Jim Whitehurst. Starting on August 31, we'll discuss the book chapter by chapter, for seven weeks, one chapter per week.

The discussion

Here's the plan: Every week, our ambassadors and community members will guide us through a new chapter of the book. They will be posing questions and offering insights to get us talking about the ways we can make our organizations more open. We also look forward to talking about the challenges we face when we do so. There'll be a new post each Monday with a brief introduction video and discussion topics that will carry us through the week.

Each Thursday, we'll gather for live Twitter chats at 2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT (18:00 UTC) featuring special guests. Start watching #OpenOrgChat for more details.

On Fridays, our leaders will summarize the week's activities, offering their reflections on what we've accomplished before we turn the page to a new chapter of the book.

Sign up for The Open Organization newsletter for weekly updates during the book club.

Regardless of whether this is your first or fifth time through the book, we invite you to participate. And if you haven't gotten a copy of the book yet, we still encourage you to chime in with your thoughts on open organization and management. Our plan is to frame the discussion in a way that doesn't require a copy of the book.

The schedule

Below is an overview of the schedule. Follow the official schedule once we get started, for additional details.

  • Week of August 31—Chapter 1: Why opening up your org matters
  • Week of September 7—Chapter 2: Igniting passion
  • Week of September 14—Chapter 3: Building engagement
  • Week of September 21—Chapter 4: Choosing meritocracy
  • Week of September 28—Chapter 5: Letting the sparks fly
  • Week of October 5—Chapter 6: Making inclusive decisions
