Black Friday first spread to Cyber Monday, then Grey Thursday. Now the week-long spending frenzy has turned charitable with Giving Tuesday.
New York’s 92nd Street Y teamed up with the United Nations Foundation to gather a growing group of companies and non-profits "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season [and to] celebrate and encourage charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations."
Open source is fundamentally about sharing and giving back to a community, so Giving Tuesday is a perfect time to think about both open source communities and other communities that could use your help. Here are a few ways:
- Crowdwise is a crowdsourced charitable giving site. The Case Foundation will be matching up to $25,000 in Crowdwise to anything on the site, and Kevin Bacon’s Six Degrees will be matching there up to $10,000.
- It's always a good time to show your support for Creative Commons. Do dual duty by purchasing Creative Commons goods to give as gifts!
- Maybe you've heard of Child's Play thanks to the Humble Indie Bundles. Maybe you don't know that you can also donate to a specific hospital either with cash or by visiting their Amazon wishlists through Child's Play.
- Support openness by donating to or joining the relatively new Open Source Hardware Association, the Open Source Initiative, or the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
- Find a local CityCamp and learn how to participate.
- For no money, simply get involved in an open source project.
