Project Ascension, the open source multi-platform game launcher, unveiled a mock-up of its interface. Similar to Steam, the interface allows users "to sign in with their Facebook or Google+ social media accounts, so that they can share their activities with friends."

Their goal is to "stay on bleeding edge of design while still keeping things familiar, friendly, and pleasing to the eye." Check it out yourself in the video below.

Linux, a viable gaming platform?

At Gaming on Linux, the author by the name of f25025105 wrote a very interesting view on Linux about if it can be a viable gaming platform. He looks back at how PCs took over from arcade games, and how later on the PC was taken over by game consoles. So, where does Linux fit in? According to the author, "it was the PC renaissance that enabled Linux gaming." He also looks at Linux as a gaming platform, and what problems it has. As well as, what can be done to improve Linux gaming.

He highlights four options for improvement:

  • understand and respect the status quo of the Linux platform
  • understand where the money is, Linux is a percentage of all game sales
  • understand the platform, as user and developer
  • pay attention to the attitude and the self-fulfilling prophecies, support companies that invest into Linux

As one of the comments on the article reads, it puts things into the right perspective. The article is not anti-FOSS, it looks beyond that.

Pick of the week: Minecraft Pi

The official Minecraft site has a great resource section: Getting started with Minecraft Pi. This resource will let you explore the world of Minecraft Pi, a special edition of Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi. You get to learn how to control your player, manually build blocks, and use the Python interface to manipulate your world. This combination allows for a fun way for kids, to learn how to code. The 'Whac-a-Block' resource could be a nice follow up for you!
