The potential for OpenStack in the enterprise
Which factor will influence the enterprise to consider OpenStack in 2014?
Big things are in store for OpenStack this year. The community is growing, now at more than 15,000 people from more than 130 countries. The next version, Icehouse, is scheduled to be released on April 17, followed by the next OpenStack Summit in May. But what will this lead to?
In a post on virtual-strategy.com, Chuck Dubuque, the Director of Product Marketing for Virtualization and OpenStack at Red Hat, provided the following prediction:
"When discussing OpenStack, one gets the sense of a storm on the horizon; it's big, it's coming, and has the potential to disrupt the way we do things. That storm is no longer on the horizon. In 2014, I believe it will arrive, cohesively and powerfully – and its potential will be fully realized."
In that post, he also outlined four reasons why OpenStack has potential in the enterprise in 2014:
- The continued focus on security
- Increased adoption within the financial, telecommunications, and public sectors
- The growing OpenStack ecosystem
- The move toward an "as-a-service" mentality
Which of these factors do you think will influence the enterprise IT-decision makers to consider OpenStack for their large-scale cloud deployments and why?
