In this week's edition of our open source news roundup, we look at the new Raspberry Pi sound card, open source kitchen design, and more.

CryEngine port comes to Linux

Full native support for Crytek's all-in-one game development toolset, CryEngine, is ready to demo on Linux. This is another big move toward increased support for gaming on the open source operating system, following game developer Valve's push to the new SteamOS operating system. CryEngine follows Valve's own Source Engine and Unity in adopting support for Linux. CryTek will offer hands-on demonstrations of the new version of CryEngine at next week's Game Developer Conference.

One Laptop Per Child lives on

Many reports this week bemoaned the demise of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. The OLPC responded by claiming that they are, in fact, not dead, but merely scaling back operations. Executive VP Giulia D'Amico told Gizmodo that they're still at work on the Android-powered XO-4 Touch tablet and planning on "becoming more hardware and OS agnostic."

Raspberry Pi is ready to rock

Last week, Raspberry Pi announced a cash reward to the first developer to port the newly-open VideoCore IV graphics core to the credit-card sized open source computer. This week, they've released a sound card featuring an onboard microphone and a Wolfson audio processor supporting high-resolution audio up to 24-bit / 192 KHz. Think of the possibilities!

Valcucine and the open source kitchen

During Milan Design Week 2014, the showroom for the innovative kitchen design firm Valcucine is holding a workshop called The Kitchen Becomes Open! Ten designers will be chosen to offer up their own ideas on reinterpreting the classic Meccanica system. Accessories, add-ons, digital fabrication, and new functional and aesthetic concepts are welcome. The project is in partnership with Arduino and dotdotdot.
