Oddly enough, I ran into this last week, but the culprit was a PDF! Although it was an older PDF that had been used for years, it wouldn't open in OS X Preview (most of the pages were blank). I successfully opened it in Red Hat's PDF viewer(!) and resaved it.
Love it! At work we have an emergency notification system which spams everyone with email and phone (text/voice) messages about the emergency and directions on what to do. No more lame, inflexible phone trees!
