I think Linux is better or on the same level as Mac on every level. The only advantage would be the lightweight of Mac as compared to the comparatively heavier Laptops with Linux. I would recommend that you go with Linux as your choice.
It is great to see how technology has been put to use to fight this pandemic. If this had occurred even 2 decades ago, we wouldn't have been able to disseminate the level of information that we can do today and it is great to see companies come together for a greater cause today.
