The pressure to have tangible "right" results is beyond ludicrous. Untold numbers of papers are a total waste of time due to the researchers having to bail on the original research and shoehorn a new "relevant" project in its stead in order to keep a corner on the funding market.

As a former homeschooler (we were taught to say "home-educated" to sound fancier, haha), I can say that this article really got me excited about the future of homeschooling. My experience was, frankly, a mixed bag as I was left with some emotional bagged as a result of the more deeply religious culture of my parents' approach to homeschooling (pretty common among my generation of homeschoolers, actually), but recently I've been struck with the positive potential for homeschooling, and open source experience and learning really jumped to mind as one of the biggest strengths.

I'll be bookmarking this and sending it to my friends who are interested in homeschooling, and I wish you well!
