That is essentially the airplane manufacturers are doing with subcontractors. They create a design and then let others bid on producing pieces of it. Without doubt, some of those suppliers have come up with innovative solutions the primary manufacturer hadn't considered. This is the same thing that happens within the diverse contributor community to open source.

If we had to pay all of the great people who have created the open source software we rely on today, the cost would be staggering. They do it because of they have a communal spirit and it's fun. Otherwise, they'd stick to their day jobs.

I'm certainly grateful to all of them.
