Great article! I can relate to a lot of it myself. I've been in open source for over 11 years now, the reason why I'm still around, is because I had great mentors as well. Mentors who shared their knowledge, and most of all, encouraged me. I guess, like you write, they spotted my passion which led me to do more and more in the project I've been active in (and still am).

I guess your article should be kind of a wake up call, for anyone in a position, to take on a mentor-ship. And so should I.

Although you don't write about it specifically, this also relates to community management. Having that in place, along with a community manager who understands and possesses these mentoring skills, is going to be a huge benefit to a community.

I'll probably end up reading your article again, there is a lot to learn from. Thanks for sharing!
