Open gaming roundup for July 19 - 25, 2015
Unreal Engine 4.8.2 released
Unreal Engine 4.8 releases a new version for maintenance that fixes over 30 issues. Looking at the changelog, a lot of those fixes involve crashreports, making the engine much more stable. Read the full details on this release at Softpedia.
Unreal Engine is a cross-platform game engine by Epic that runs on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It can be downloaded from the Unreal Engine website.
jMonkeyEngine + OpenVR
On Road to VR, veteran game developer by the name of Phr00t writes about his favorite 3D engine, jMonkeyEngine, a free and open source 3D engine. "A match made in heaven: VR gaming, with any supported headset, on any operating system. Software and hardware could compete and grow with no artificial borders." He used a combination of his favorite engine and OpenVR to make a recent breakthrough: "smooth, accurate and fast Oculus Rift support." Clearly, his goal of open and free development becoming a reality.
Laby, a Wichita State LUG game
Games aren't always just for fun, in some cases they're used teach others. Wichita State University's Linux User Group has a free game called Laby to introduce kids to Linux. The goal of the game is to use commands to guide an ant out of a labyrinth. Brian Kiralyfalvi, one of the kids, said "it was as much fun as the computer games he plays at home. It’s kind of like a Rubik’s Cube where you keep on trying to solve it."
Pick of the week: Nixie Pixel's Linux gaming story
The "pick of the week" is a new addition to the gaming roundup. Inspired by Joshua Holm, my fellow Opensource.com Communitiy Moderator who wrote the gaming news last week while I was on holiday, I checked some of Nixie Pixels video's.
My pick this week is related to the series My Linux Story on Opensource.com and video by Nixie Pixel. Enjoy!
