I have never got to grips with emacs but have used vi / vim for [too] many years. However, my editor of choice is nano. It's fast, easy to use and intuitive with all of the features that I regularly need and use.
You can also use an alternative 'htop' which has similar features and semi graphical output for each cpu core.
