Joe, I agree that sometimes the version of software included in a Linux distro can be a few versions behind the current project offering. It makes sense since Linux projects are continually being updated. Thanks for the helpful info. I'll keep that in mind!
Angel, thanks for coming to my rescue. I will keep this in mind as an option to resolve any future issues like this. I am usually able to resolve most of my technical issues "Googling" for answers. I have yet to try IRC. On the Ubuntu 12.04 partition of my Toshiba Satellite, I applied the latest Software Updates and tried Cheese again. This time it worked! (However, on HP Pavillion with Ubuntu 13.10 it's unresolved. I did run Cheese via the terminal to capture the error messages on Gedit. They're waiting for me to troubleshoot later on today.) Have not tried Linux Mint 14 yet. I'm guessing some Gstreamer updates might have fixed it.
