Laura, thanks for your comment. I'm inclined to think that a difference exists between the developer community and the population at large. Of course, that's completely conjecture, which is why a real study would be useful. I agree that merely talking about this openly is a vitally important thing to do.

You bring up a great point that family drives understanding of the open organization and not the other way around. I wonder how many companies that claim to think of employees as family actually treat them like family in this regard. I suspect it's very few.
