Thanks for joining the conversation! I think we do agree on a lot of things (like you mentioned). In fact, I do try to make the case in my article that the open source community *does not* really fill the need of tech support: it's an entirely different way of doing things.
I'm really comparing a proprietary system (which is closed, but using it enables you to request features and get tech support from the corresponding company) versus using an open source system.
You bring up an entirely different model which is increasingly popular and does indeed give you the best parts of those two worlds - using an open source system, but pairing with a provider who helps you use it in some way - through hosting, consultation, tech support etc. It's a great model, so thanks for bringing it up! I can see a whole new blog post on how those two communities interact. :-)
