That's a decision for authors to make. Without copyright, you couldn't have open source licensing at all. You would be forcing everyone to publish their work in the public domain or closed source. Artists (including musicians) do not <I>have</I> to sell their rights, they choose to do so. There are those that don't, and copyright protects their investment.
