I'd like to know where these recycling centers are where you can pick up used machines for cheap or free. My town's "transfer station" doesn't want you poking through the electronics container they have for recycling (although I *did* manage to score a couple 4G DDR3 DIMMs once). Even the local thrift stores don't want to carry computers or printers (although they will have display panels, they probably think they're televisions).

My old equipment generally comes from friends or relatives upgrading their MSWin machines, and they don't want to deal with the old hardware. Although I did once score a ThinkPad T430 (needed a new CMOS battery) and a 2010 MBP for $100 at a flea market, but these are exceedingly rare. The T430 is handy as a backup for my company laptop, and the MBP was handy for my daughter to do FaceTime with her tutors.

Being on Comcast/suXfinity I wouldn't want to rely on the "cloud" for anything more than a few hundred megabytes of data (due to their 300G cap).

Boy, it feels weird to see a beginner tutorial on *DOS*. Then again, I might have forgotten some of the various tricks & tips by now anyway (the same way I found I had to refresh my AIX knowlege whenever I didn't use it for a couple years).
