Judy Malan, partner at McKinsey & Company, joined its Johannesburg Office in 1998 and has a partner since 2004. Her work centers on building strong institutions, capable of effective delivery, with a particular focus on the public sector. A major part of this is about developing systemic approaches and ensuring the sustained success of large-scale organizational transformation. She works with system/company leaders and senior teams to apply “hard” approaches and tools to the “soft” aspects of organisational performance--so shifting the underlying mindsets that drive group behaviour and developing leadership capacity.
Most recently, my work has concentrated on the public and social sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa, focused on health care, education and job creation, where the environment offers ample opportunities to help address complex systematic challenges. Some examples of our work include working with a large South African mining company to align its top team and transform its performance culture; supporting a provincial Department of Education to develop and roll-out in-classroom coaching capacity; and supporting the Namibian government on a programme to transform the effectiveness of their healthcare system though developing leaders.
