This is an excellent observation and may represent the paradigm of the future. In fact, such approaches are beginning to appear in the literature. However, a number of constraining factors put these approaches out of reach for individual classrooms, many small labs and even many small institutions currently. In such cases a distro such as Biolinux provides an alternative.
