Excellent article! I was just recently having a similar conversation with some coworkers . We were discussing what impact the size of a company has on it's stated values. As a company grows it seems that the values that were the driving force behind the rise of the company seem to be swapped out for values like, efficiency, improvement, focus, etc. I agree with you that those are very good qualities. I also agree that efficiency is most likely not a quality in your company that is driving you to get out of bed every morning to rush into the office. :)
Pieces of large companies can retain that culture but all to often is seems that the passion, drive, and excitement that created the environment in which all the people wanted to come work for is systematically dismantled from above. To make the company more, well, corporate...
How does a company grow and retain the culture that made it a great company? I don't know. I will however be using this article to try and start a grass roots movement in my organization to rekindle some of the culture that has slowly been eroded over the years.
Great article. My only comment is on item 6 in your list of core values. In this case I think maybe it needs to have a 6a an 6b.
6. Expectations.
a. Have high expectations for yourself and the work your provide.
If you expect yourself to consistently provide quality work, you will.
b. Have low expectations for how often your work will be accepted
