Hi Greg - I think this is a great point - pay ideally is based on contribution not on title. But I might look at it a different way. If someone is being promoted to a higher level- whether as a manager or individual contributor - I would hope that is because they are adding value and taking on more accountability. So, promotions and raises are correlated for that reason. e.g. you aren't paying someone more because they got promoted, you are paying them more because they are adding more value.

No doubt there are organizations where you need to "embrace politics" to climb the ladder; but the beauty of an Open Org is that the ladder no longer matters.
