Gitlab is just one hosting option. As I explain in the article, this works for any Git source and destination (and as Jason Baker points out, it works on repositories not owned by you).
Then again, all of this can be done with Git hooks or any number of tools, so this is really an exercise for using Ansible and not intended to highlight some special feature of Ansible.
