Having been educated and trained as a nurse and healthcare administrator I view the supportive role that health information plays as varying based on the setting and invasive degree of the contemplated medical technology intervention. In a clinical healthcare setting involving situations where patients are contemplating highly invasive medical interventions the primary goal is one of insuring that "informed conset" is attained according to laws and social standards in the locale. As a nurse I must be a patient advocate and promote the right of a patient to be informed about all aspects of his/her care. Within a community setting this would more likely involve prevention, early detection, and disease management as the major emphasis with IT providing age, sex, race, and risk based medical educational information, screening tracking, communication via social, email, and automated mailings, support group tracking, referral automation, concurrent tracking of adherance and compliance and capture of outcomes that include morbidity and mortality. I see the development of new or revised community based portals into the healthcare system that provide assistance for individuals whose medical problem(s) exceed their capability to provide self-care. Emphasis would be to increase knowledge, skills, instill motivation, and emphsize the individuals role as their own and their dependents provider of self-care. The role of the healthcare system would be to assess and address deficits in self-care and provide supportive medical care in situations that overwhelm the individuals ability to provide for their own or dependents self-care. The goals are always to return or maintain the individual's capability to provide for their own self-care and realize the highest level of wellness in a qualitative and quantitative sense.
