Hi Dan, if you want to get involved and contribute in FOSS, the Joomla! project would love to have some help with documentation. There are many aspects to docs in an open source project and code isn't necessarily the only need. Perhaps with start ups, but older projects need docs for users and they must maintain their docs too.
Writing docs for users is generally easier and along the way you pick up more and more technical material (advanced users). This usually applies to any FOSS project.
