I'm the founder of Gratipay, an open organization with a mission to cultivate an economy of gratitude, generosity, and love. We help companies and others pay for open source—and we're funded on our own platform. Offline, I live outside Pittsburgh, PA, USA, and online, I live on Slack, IRC, and GitHub.

I do find it distasteful when open source developers express a sense of entitlement and resentment at not being paid for their work. Open source to me is about intrinsic motivation! If you don't want to do open source, then don't.

What I'm trying to point towards is the possibility of open organizations as an *economic* entity that combine the intrinsic motivation inherent in open source with economic vitality. Can we have our cake and eat it, too?
