Good points. I'd like to add the suggestion of bringing a small travel router, preferably running OpenWrt or a derivative. I find it useful for re-sharing WiFi and setting up a VPN connection to 'home' (given a stable connection in the first place).
Also OpenWrt has many additional packages available, effectively letting you use it as a mini-server. That's not only great for myself, but it's also a good illustration of the power of Linux. And it's not too expensive to give away to budding IT-aficionados (great excuse for myself to buy and try another model ;) ).
