This is a trend Chris Anderson charts in his book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Free-Future-Radical-Chris-Anderson/dp/1401322905">Free</a>. In <a href="http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-03/ff_free">this article</a>, Anderson outlines the book's argument (and offers a nice overview of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebie_marketing">razor blade economics</a>, an old marketing tactic that's as relevant today as it ever was).
