I'm glad it worked out well for you, but that seems like a jerk move by your brother-in-law. Not the FLOSS evangelism approach that I would advocate.

Great advice. I particularly like the part about adding a field for nickname (Twitter handle, etc.). At one conference I regularly attend, attendees have been writing their Twitter handle and/or IRC nick on badges for years, but the organizers have never added a field.

My favorite badges print the given name larger than the surname.
