And yet, one of our biggest creative industries started out as independents fleeing the tyranny of abusive patents. Edison owned the patent on the motion picture in the early 1900's and his trust dictated what movies could and could not be made. Independents wanting creative freedom moved their business to a little town in the west called Hollywood. Here, film makers were able to practice their trade with less harassment than they would receive on the East Coast. Hollywood would later become the center of most motion picture studios, all because of a bunch of pirates. This is a prime example of patents being used to stifle creativity. Its also a prime example that the pirates will always find a way.
