Lisha Sterling is the executive director at Geeks Without Bounds, a nonprofit organization that supports humanitarian open source technology through hackathons, education programs, a project accelerator, and on the ground technology deployment support. She learned how to program on a Timex Sinclair 1000 that her father bought by mail order when she was 8 years old. She started working as a programmer and sysadmin in 1993 and in 2001 she decided that life was too short to work on closed source software.
