The first place that I worked on Unix, used cpio for backups and sending out software updates by tape. The next place I worked used tar and I could never remember how to create a backup. Fortunately, we were using Motorola Powerstacks and on that implementation of Unix, the cpio command had an option to create the backup in tar format and vice versa. I reckon Motorola Powerstacks look like hi-fi units.

Recently we moved our Moodle instance to a new box and decided to change the web address to something more sensible. Editing the MySQL database dump was a breeze with sed under cygwin. In fact, that was the only way to do it. The 5.5MB dump could not be opened in notepad, wordpad, etc.
