Dead or not, Nexuiz Classic still installs and plays quite nicely. Not sure about the multiplayer online stuff though.

Great suggestions about Open Arena and Red Eclipse. A follow-up article to this one would be neat, I hope someone gathers some further open source games and writes about them.

I agree that it's tough to guarantee high quality anything, but in my experience you have a "bit budget" largely determined by the bandwidth of each participant. When I'm doing stuff online that doesn't require video, I use Mumble (you can read my article about it here: https://opensource.com/article/20/4/voice-chat-mumble) and maximize bit depth. Since I'm not "spending" any of my bit budget on video, the audio ends up being pretty good.

Your p2p theory is a good one, and worth testing, but I feel like the constraint of participant bandwidth will be a determining factor either way.
