I think one of the hardest challenges to solve may be egos of the individual contributors and leaders of the projects.

As you say listening to the other projects is vital. And also trying to contributing and building trust via action.

I soo agree with you Jono. That value of F2F not only shows in (open source) communities, but also inside companies with workers from other teams you are supposed to work with.
Without a F2F you are only an anonymous email-address or irc nick. Once you have met in person, you become a face a real person.
