Great article filled with great tips. Thanks!
I haven't bought a new computer since my university days, after which I discovered I could get a free hand-me-down by helping people transfer data from their old computer to their new one, and then offering politely to take their old computer off their hands. Even my main workstation, built from parts, has a bunch of second-hand components (the case, PSU, fans).

Computers have *at least* twice the lifespan that companies claim. It's better financially and ecologically to at least try to rescue before buying.

Interesting that you dislike the behaviour of en_US.UTF8 sorting. I'd never noticed it, somehow, but now that you point it out, I believe I prefer it because generally when I'm looking for, say, .emacs.d, I think of that as beginning with an |e| even though it literally starts with a dot. To each their own!

I would be curious about what's causing the behaviour. (Not curious enough to go fetch the source and look, though, because otherwise I'd have an answer!)

Thanks for the commentary!
