First, it's worth noting (as mentioned in the article) that this is *not* a tutorial book. It's a reference book for Krita.
Second, it's very common these days for there to be educational resources for open source software offered for a fair price. For a book like this one, it's certainly a worthwhile expense and encourages creation of more quality resources like this one in the future.
Examples of the work created by the students? I believe that there are some images of that in the presentation that they gave. If you're referring to the project descriptions/worksheets, you may want to contact Monique about that.
