This could be down to a few problems. Hard to diagnose (and probably not terribly efficient to try) here in the comments section. I suggest you open an account on http://linuxquestions.org, if you haven't already got one, and paste in the contents of your shell script as it is now, and the exact command you are trying. We'll try to debug over there.
I remap ctrl-a to ctrl-J, as so far I've not found any shell that utilizes ctrl-J for anything else.
GNU screen is great. One of those applications I can't live without. Great article!
